Marketing agencies and hedge funds operate in completely separate professional universes, yet they have constructed the same structural illusion: a reporting framework that looks rigorous on the surface, rewards whoever sits closest to the outcome, and quietly obscures what actually caused the result.
This is the attribution problem. It has been discussed endlessly inside each industry. Nobody has connected the two, until now.
The Same Question, Two Industries, Zero Good Answers

The arrival of AI-driven marketing analytics tools and AI-powered quant models has added a new layer of complexity without resolving the underlying attribution problem. In many organizations, it has made things worse.
In marketing, AI attribution tools trained on biased historical data replicate historical biases at scale. If last-click attribution data was used to train a model’s conversion probability estimates, the model learns that paid search causes conversions, because that is what the training data showed. The model then optimizes spend toward paid search. The bias compounds.
In finance, AI-driven factor models can surface spurious correlations that look like alpha signals in backtests. The model is technically sophisticated. The feature engineering and training data selection still reflect human choices that can be optimistic, selective, or unconsciously self-serving.

There is a serious counterargument worth raising. The most important insight here is not that marketing attribution is like financial attribution. The insight is that both industries have a version of the same organizational pathology: measurement systems that serve the measurer rather than the decision-maker.
Marketing teams that understand how factor attribution works in finance will ask better questions about their own multi-touch models. Finance professionals who understand how last-click attribution distorts marketing investment decisions will recognize the analogous distortions in simplified performance reporting.
